College Essay 2

Racism is a term given to the cruel and inhumane way that people are treated because of their race or ethnicity. It happens everywhere. It happens in places where people of different races come together in a country, community, job, or school. It can ruin the lives of victims who have low self-esteem. It makes them feel that they are not wanted or do not belong where they are, as a result of this they can give up and end up living up to the stereotypes that surround them . Even though I became a victim of racism, I never gave up on proving to racists and all those who underrate people of different races that we are all-human and are competent of doing anything.                                                                                                                                                                                     I once attended a program that was recommended for me because of my grades. The program helped immigrants who are yet to go to college particularly high school students to know what they need to do to get into college. We were about twenty students in the class. Eighty percent of the class was Hispanic students, nineteen percent Africans and one percent    Vietnamese.                                                                                                                                                 One day, I was walking after class to the bus stop with the only Vietnamese in the class, Uyen when I made a random statement. I told her I would love to go to Stanford University after high school. Instantly, she gave me the “in your dreams” look. She told me told me that, that thought should stay in my dreams because there was no way I could get in. I felt hurt and confused at the same time. She told me I did not have what it takes to get into Stanford University. She told me I was not smart enough or financially worthy of getting into the school. Moreover, that people of my ethnicity did not have the kind of knowledge in education to get into any school of that sort. Therefore, I asked her if she was eligible for schools like that. Surprisingly, she said she felt and knew she was eligible for such colleges. She told me she had won academic awards in both her country and in the United States, had advanced placement classes and an average of 99.62, which she said, was easy to obtain and maintain because of her smartness.                                                                                                                                                                                                          What she said could have offended me, but I totally understood this in a different perception. In fact, I took this as an advice because after that conversation I realized how far behind I was from my colleagues. Immediately, I had the desire to study with much more dedication and to involve myself in academic activities. After the second semester of school, my average had risen to a 91.45 and I passed all my classes. Now I feel eligible to go to any college of my choice.  Although she had a negative and ignorant view of people of my race, I ignored it and focused on how I can use what she said to me to better my life.                                                                                                                                                                                                           Racism can have a negative or positive effect on its victims. It depends on what the victim chooses. If the negative part of the situation is chosen, someone might end up living up to the stereotype. However, if the victim chooses the positive side, as I did, they will be successful in life. You always find the bright side of every bad situation and hold on to it until you come out successful.

Resume Lesson

I learnt that first impressions are very important, it describes who you are to the person. A suit (navy, black or dark grey) and a suit skirt that is long enough to make you sit comfortably is the appropriate dressing for an interview. Good communication skills are very important like having eye contact while shaking a person’s hands firmly shows that you appreciate what he or she did for you. I learnt that my resume is supposed to reflect a clear picture of whom I am. The part of my resume that should always change when applying for new jobs is the objective anything apart from that stays the same.

Art Institute

The most important thing for a college student is to get a job right after college when he or she enters into the working field. The differences obvious to me about this school compared to the two mercy campuses I visited was that  it was much more busy than the other two campuses I visited. The extra ordinary creativeness and the delicate way all the dresses in the fashion department were made caught my attention and interest in fashion right there. The video department was the part that caught less of my attention. The career of my interest does not link to art but I will definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in art.

Mercy Bronx Campus

What I liked about the Mercy Bronx campus compared to the Mercy Manhattan campus was that it was much bigger than the Bronx campus. The Bronx campus had a bigger library, a cafeteria, and more equipped classrooms while the Manhattan campus   had a smaller library, no cafeteria, less equipped classrooms. I prefer the Bronx to the Manhattan campus because it is bigger and has a calm and quiet surrounding. I could see myself in the Bronx campus because the quietness and calmness of the surrounding enhances the pace of a student’s habit to study without distruction.

Time Management

Time management is process by which one fits his or her day’s activity to suit him or herself.  I learnt that if you manage your time wisely you might have more free time to do other things that you did not plan for. The only change I will make in my schedule this year to assist me in utilizing my time efficiently is to start timing everything that I do.  The change I will have to make in my life with regard  to management  change once  I get to college is to on track in everything I do and   do things much faster.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        

Class Participation

I learned that I participate in class but the efficiency of my participation is very low. The difference in how I participate in class and how a student should participate in class is very little. I have a very low voice so when I ask a question of contribute in class; I tend to repeat my sentence because nobody hears what I say for the first time.   I have learnt my lesson so in the next school year I will try my best to speak loud enough and to make my statements clear.  This experience will really help me when I get to college because in college I would have to do presentations in front of the class  and if I do not speak loud enough or make my statements clear  I will end up getting a low grade .

Social Topic

    There are many issues causing problems in the nation. Some of these issues occur in communities, schools, jobs, buses, trains and most importantly affect people. Some of these issues are drugs, violence, gun control, racism, bulling etc.  Of all these issues, I choose racism. Racism is a term used to refer to the cruel and inhumane way people treat other people of diverse race or ethnicity. I chose this particular topic because it has had a great effect on my life.  After I became a victim of racism, I decided that I would not be who others think I will be, but I will be what I want to be, which somebody is great in future.   As long as I have God in my life, nothing can stop me from being great not even low self-esteem. I want this essay to prove to victims of racism that it does not matter what people think about  you  all that matters is what you think about yourself.

M y College visit

What I learned about Mercy College’s setting was that every class size varied depending on the kind of program that is taught there.  I learned that there are people who help to adjust your schedule to into your daily life thus if you are working, a parent etc. The admission process at Mercy College is similar to every College except the provision of the SAT/ACT scores are optional .It is a very small campus so it is easier to get help when you are in need of it. Mercy College is a great financial option because it offers financial aid. The PACT program is a useful tool to students in a way that it serves as a source of counseling to students.   The most important thing to do while completing an application is that you have to make sure your essay has been spellchecked and read over at least twice and make sure you fill in all the information needed.

Five questions for Mercy College

Are engineerimg students allowed to worrk in the engineering department of the school ? What is the average class size?   Do you offer internships for engineering .students  ?   Do you have  clubs that are mainly about engineering ? Does the school involve the engineering students in competitions?                                                  

Scholarships for college

Paying for college is very difficult for an average American. In order to get the finances to pay for my college tuition I researched for scholarships and I found that I am eligible to apply to the    NSBE PBS&J Corporate Scholarship Program and ECE Undergraduate scholarship.  I qualify for NSBE PBS&J Corporate Scholarship Program because it requires a minimum 3.0 average and  i have a exactly 3.0 average. I qualify for ECE Undergraduate scholarship because they also require the same average .

Paying for college

College is another step in education where one studies more about what they are interested in or what they love to do. The only problem about getting into the college of your choice is that you might have all it takes to get into that college, but if your financial status doesn’t correspond with it you can’t get in. One of the most important things to think about when searching for colleges is finance. The CUNY school am considering to attend is City College. The cost for getting into City College is 5,158 dollars. As New  York  State resident I qualify for the Pell and TAP grant which covers 100% of my  tuition for college and I also get more money for my personal needs.

Campus Living

College is not only about studying to achieve your aim in life. It also includes learning how to be independent and to grow to be a responsible adult. Weighing the advantages and disadvantages of living at home versus living on campus, I prefer to live in a campus rather than at home.  For a kid who is learning how to ride a bicycle the next step is for him is to take out the training wheels and to apply the knowledge he already has to become a perfect rider.  This relates to living on campus in a way that when one applies the training his parents gave him to his independence life on campus he will have a greater chance of being a responsible adult in life. However, when one lives at home he will have difficulty fitting into the outside his home.  These are the reasons I choose Stony Brook University.

The SUNY College that best fits me

The next step of education after high school is to go to college or learn a trade but I choose to go to college. As my senior year of high school approaches, I have been researching about colleges that will fit my GPA and my SAT scores. So far, I have found out that among the CUNY schools City College was the college that my GPA and my SAT scores would fit in. I started researching SUNY School and I chose Stony Brook University and Oswego State University. Stony Brook University requires a GPA of 91 and an SAT score that might work for me. Oswego State University requires a GPA of 85 and above and an SAT score that will suit me. I prefer Oswego State University because my GPA is suitable for it and I will need to study more to obtain their SAT score requirements.

Smart Goals

Determination and optimism is what one needs to reach her goals. To achieve my goals of graduating high school and getting into college, I need to be determined to study and be optimistic about my ability of graduating high school and getting into college. Firstly, I will need to get to school and to my classes on time. Then follow the rules and regulations of the school in order to get a good academic reputation. In addition, I need to be focused and participate in classroom activities every day. I will also make sure I do extracurricular activities. I will need to put more effort on studying   on my own than on entertainment in order to pass my classes and regents. By January 2012, I am hoping that all these needs will be met. Moreover, I will thrive for an advance Regents diploma.

My college search requirements

The college I am best prepared for is City College because it requires a GPA of 87.8 and it requires  a SAT  score of 1134 . This has not really changed my plans because I just  have to increase my study time to meet their SAT score and to maintain my GPA. I might have to  do more practicals  and less theory . For example, I might have to solve more math problems than reading them.

The CUNY School that best fits me

The two colleges that suit my course of interest are City College and College of Staten Island.  I prefer City College because it offers a bachelors degree in electrical engineering. Student success is most frequently defined by the quality of life on a campus which supports a culture that values and respects diversity and is tolerant of individual and group differences.Because i think living in an environment that you  are accepted for who you are and not what you are helps you not only emotionally but acadamically also.I think College of Staten Island doesn't fit because of the distance.

The typical jobs in management are food service manager, office manager , production manager ,industrial engineer manager , etc.
